If you cannot file your income tax return by 1 May, you can request an extension via Mijn Belastingdienst. In most cases this gives you until 1 September of that year. Filing through a tax adviser often triggers an automatic extension to 1 May the following year. Note: an extension to file is not the same as an extension to pay — tax interest still accrues on any amount owed.
